Instagram offers various interesting face filters to users that make their pictures look more Exciting and Funny. Many of these filters are based on face recognition technology.
However, On May 11, 2022, Meta, the owning company of Instagram, decided to remove all the filters from Instagram in Texas that uses face recognition technology.

Why Texas & Illinois Banned Instagram Filters?
Texas and Illinois Banned those Instagram filters that work using the facial geometry of users. They took this decision because it violates the laws of Texas and Illinois.
According to the Texas Capture or Use Biometric Identifier Act, No one has the right to collect or store biometric information of the Texas Citizens without their consent.
Certain filters on Instagram need to record and store users’ facial geometry to function duly. But they were Violating the Texas Capture or Use Biometric Identifier Act. Illinois also has similar laws against collecting and using biometric information without people’s consent.
Thus, on February 14, 2022, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Meta for the violations of their laws.
Some Instagram filters only change the background or color of a picture, and they do not need to collect facial geometry for that. These types of filters are still accessible in Texas and Illinois.
Can you Get the Banned Instagram Filters Back?
Many Instagram users in Texas and Illinois said they don’t have any problem with Instagram recording and using their facial geometry. However, Instagram removed its face filters that work on facial geometry for now.
Meta stated that they would provide Texas and Illinois users an option to choose to use those filters that work on facial recognition technology.
